Which is better blown in insulation or batting?

Generally, we don't recommend installing batts in the attic — blown insulation can fill the space better for more energy-efficient performance.

If you need to install more insulation in your home, you may be confused and overwhelmed with all the different types. You’ve probably read about fiberglass, one of the most commonly used insulation materials.

Fiberglass is available in two forms: blown-in (loose-fill) and batts. Blanket insulation, made of batts or rolls, is widely used and often made of fiberglass. But what type of insulation is best? Is blown-in insulation better than batts?

Differences Between the Two

Typically made of fiberglass, batt insulation is available in pre-cut panels and is one of the most common forms of insulation. It’s often installed in spaces relatively free of obstructions (such as pipes and wiring). Batt insulation is smoother and can almost be considered a thermal blanket. It’s often installed in walls, particularly for new construction. Blown-in insulation, also referred to as loose-fill insulation, is installed using a blowing machine. Depending on the material of the insulation, the installation method may vary slightly. Blown-in and batt/roll insulation can be installed in different areas of a home, including the attic and walls. Fiberglass insulation is available in blown-in form — as is cellulose (referred to as loose-fill cellulose). Blown-in fiberglass and cellulose have superior sound control capabilities and can help reduce noises from outside and inside, between different rooms and levels.

Which One Is Better?

Generally, we don’t recommend installing batts in the attic — blown insulation can fill the space better for more energy-efficient performance. But this may not be the case for every home. A professional can assess your home and insulation needs to determine which type of insulation would be ideal. At Gold Star Insulation, we install blown and batt fiberglass — and other materials — to meet every need. If you need to insulate your home in the Sacramento area, contact Gold Star Insulation today.

What adds more value bedroom or bathroom?

Bathroom additions have twice the resale value of a new bedroom. Bathroom additions have twice the resale value of a new bedroom.

So exactly what should you improve when you redo your kitchen or bathroom? Think traditional: all-wood cabinets, commercial-look appliances, natural wood or stone floors and stone countertops. Walk-in showers have replaced whirlpool tubs as the must-have cleaning machine in bathrooms, Straughan says. His clients will "forgo the tub to have a big walk-in shower" if they don't have room for both. "Most people don't have time to take a bath," Straughan points out. "So a lot of time you're giving away all that square footage for a tub that rarely gets used." Floor-to-ceiling steam showers are also hot (so to speak). Two key points to consider, however: First, don't spend money remodeling the bathroom if it's the only one you've got. Your money is better spent adding a second bath. Many people love "the charm of older homes," says Long Beach, Calif., based realtor Dick Gaylord. "But a number of older homes lack a sufficient number of bathrooms. So if you've got a four-bedroom, one-bath home, it's certainly going to pay to add a second bathroom." A National Association of Realtors study by Florida State University professors G. Stacy Sirmans and David Macpherson found that adding a bathroom increased the sale price of a home by 8.7 percent, more than twice the rate for adding a bedroom.
