Now you have time to carefully review your home security, the best place to start is with your front door. Most intruders enter through the front door, after all. There are a number of factors to take into consideration, so allow us to explain.

Are composite doors the best option for me?

Composite doors are renowned for their low maintenance strength. Literally meaning ‘made up of several parts’, there are two types of composite doors you need to be aware of before making your decision.

GRP composite doors

Also known as fibreglass, Glass Reinforced Polyester composite doors are typically 44mm thick and made-up of a high-density polyurethane foam and a timber sub-frame.

Timber core composite doors

Timber core composite doors are the most reliable of the two, as they’re 48mm thick – which is 10% thicker than a standard GRP front door. Reinforced with a 5-chamber profile, a robust ‘through-colour’ ABS thermo plastic skin and the choice of laminated or triple glazing, timber core composite doors provide unrivalled security. Dedicated to delivering the highest quality home improvement products, these are the only type of composites that Stormclad install. Are aluminium front doors secure?

Aluminium is an inherently strong, lightweight, flexible and corrosion resistant material. An aluminium front door can be made approximately 30% larger than a composite door, so if your front door is an unusual size or shape, an aluminium front door will thoroughly secure your home from the outside world. Providing the best resistance to forced entry, aluminium also weighs 67% less than steel, which makes it much less likely to warp over time.

Are wooden front doors good?

If you live in a listed building or within a conservation area, you may have no option but to replace your front door with a ‘like-for-like’ material. A modern timber door is much more secure than an old one, and will also eliminate age-old problems such as warping, rotting and cracking.

Your Murphy Door arrives fully assembled and pre-hung in the jamb, much like a regular interior door. In order to determine what size you will need, you'll need to measure your existing doorway. This can be done with an existing door (finished opening) or a rough opening (where you can see the 2x4's). For reference, standard interior door widths range from 24"-36" (finished opening). While a standard door height is 80" (finished opening). The difference between a rough opening and finished opening is usually 2-3 inches. Refer to the charts below to determine what size of door you will need. If you have questions, give us a call at 888-458-5911. You can also check out our video on how to measure here.
