What R-value insulation do I need for a shed?

Shed walls usually are framed with 2-by-4-inch lumber spaced so the centers of the 2-by-4s are 16 inches apart; that arrangement requires using 15-inch wide, 3-1/2-inch thick batt or blanket insulation with an R-11 or R-13 rating.

An insulated outdoor shed offers a wider range of possibilities for use beyond simply storing tools and equipment. You can use a properly insulated shed as a place to start seedlings in late winter for spring transplanting. Blanket insulation made from fiberglass, mineral wool or cellulose fibers is sold in rolls that can be cut for a custom fit. Each insulation material is rated with an R value to indicate its heat flow resistance; materials with high R values are better insulators than those with lower R values. Selecting fiberglass insulation that has an attached vapor barrier saves installation time because otherwise the vapor barrier needs to be installed separately.
