Composite doors have become more popular over the last decade. As they encompass the best parts of different types of materials used in door manufacturing, they provide a stylish, sturdy and reliable alternative to solid timber or uPVC doors, both of which have many downsides. The difference is because they are composites, they do not have the same downsides, only all the advantages from the sum of their parts. If you are interested in buying composite doors for your property, one thing you will want to know is how much a composite door is going to cost.

What is the average cost of a composite door?

Composite door prices can vary a lot. Unless you opt for a very standard design composite door with no customisation, it is very hard to give a specific price because they are bespoke products. If you are going to take care of the installation yourself and don’t want anything particularly fancy, you may be able to buy composite doors with the minimum accessories and hardware between £550 and £600. Whereas if you are looking for the best quality composite doors with the highest specification accessories and hardware you should expect composite door prices to increase and to pay between £1,200 and £1,400. Of course, this is just an average price and the only way you are going to have an accurate quote for the work involved and the design and construction of the composite doors you want is by giving us the details and measurements.

Are composite doors expensive?

Although it depends on the type of composite door you choose, yes, they are generally more expensive. However, rather than letting that put you off from investing in them, you need to consider why they are more expensive (when you compare UPVC doors vs Composite doors for example.

There are very good reasons for the higher price.

They are one of the most advanced types of doors available on the market right now. Composite doors are much more robust than other doors because they take the best parts of other materials for their construction and use them most effectively.

This is why they cost more.

Now we understand that composite doors may not be for everyone or maybe out of your budget, but when looking at the price it's important to factor in what you get for the price and how it can benefit you and your household.

While it’s true that just choosing to have any composite doors is probably better than the alternative, if you are looking for the best value, we would recommend composite doors that have a solid timber core. This reinforced central element is what gives the door its rigidity and durability. What goes into the pricing of a composite door? (What can make them cheaper or more expensive?) As we have highlighted already, there are many good reasons why composite doors are so expensive. To give you a more comprehensive understanding, that will also help you when looking for the best composite doors, we are going to highlight the different aspects of them that can affect the overall price and determine whether they are expensive or cheap.

The Quality

The first thing we want to look at is the overall quality and robustness of composite doors. Depending on the manufacturer you choose you either get the benefit of a laminated hardwood timber core or an insulating polyurethane, CFC-free foam core. Although it is generally considered to be better, it is also worth keeping in mind that the former is more expensive than the latter.

The Style

Different styles of composite doors require different amounts of effort and work. As a result, manufacturers often charge more or less for certain styles. Another factor with regards to the style of composite doors is that if it is popular and demanded in huge quantities, you may find that some manufacturers offer heavy discounts.

The Colours

One of the real benefits of opting for a composite door over the more traditional wooden or metallic doors is the variety of colours you can choose from. In general, it is unlikely that a composite door in a specific colour is going to cost more or less than another, with most standard colours. However, some manufacturers may charge a premium on top of the standard price for non-standard colours that require the help of colour bonding techniques offered by specialists. (You can choose to paint a composite door <-- see our guide for how - a different colour at a later date, but there are some careful steps you need to take.)

Doors don't necessarily need to have glazing elements in them.

If you prefer the maximum amount of privacy, then you are probably going to want a solid composite door that does not have any windows. However, if you want to have a certain amount of light coming through to the hallway or the room your front door leads to, then glazing is an important feature. If you have any glazing element in your composite door, this is going to add to the price because it requires more work and effort to manufacture. Whether you choose to have double glazing or single glazing is also going to have an impact on the price too. A further difference to the price is whether you are interested in having conventional clear glass panels in your composite doors or would like colour-glass panels. As coloured glass requires a lot more work to produce, it is more expensive.

Security and Locking System

Security is an important factor to consider when choosing composite doors for your home. This is where composite doors excel. Rather than explaining, take a look at this video to see how secure they are for yourself... It’s very much a common feature for composite doors to be built with multi-point locking systems. However, the price and quality of the lock cylinder you choose can vary a lot.

The Hardware and Accessories

When it comes to the choice of different hardware and accessories, there are plenty of options available. The price of composite doors can vary depending on these, like letter plates, knockers and handles.
