Pallets are widely used in transportation; it’s, therefore, no surprise that many of them are freely available in homes begging to be used in various DIY projects in mind. But before you reuse or repurpose any pallet, you have to ensure that it’s safe for the project. One way to do that is by looking at the pallet markings and stamps. On most pallets, there will be a stamp marking; others can be identified by their color or size color. Here’s a guide to understanding how to read pallet stamps.

What do pallet stamp markings mean?

Pallet markings can be broken down into four categories.

IPPC = International Pallets

Pallets traveling between nations are marked with IPPC stamps. The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) stipulates that the pallets be built of materials free from invasive pests and diseases.

Features of IPPC pallet stamps include:

The IPPC logo

A geo-specific identifier: The first two letters identify the country of origin, followed by a region identifier. The pallet’s unique registration number is also found here. A display of the treatment stamps and national phytosanitary certificates (if space allows)

Treated pallets

Treatment stamps printed on pallets identify the type of treatment used to remove parasites and insects.

Common treatment stamp markings include:

HT (Heat Treated) . If you see HT pallets, it means they are heat-treated pallets. These pallets are heated for at least 30 minutes at high temperatures for hardwoods to eradicate insects and parasites. DB (Debarked) : Debarked pallets are made of wood whose bark has been removed for any additional heat treatment to work effectively. KD (Kiln Dried) : Indicates pallet woods dried in a kiln to eliminate pests and fungi, and prevent warping. If a pallet is both kiln-dried and heat-treated, it will have the KD-HT stamp marking MB (Methyl Bromide) : Methyl bromide is used as an alternative treatment in parts of the world where heat treatments can’t eliminate pests. Pallets treated with methyl bromide have the MB stamp marking . Note that methyl bromide is highly toxic and makes the pallet dangerous in fires or craft projects. MB pallets have been banned from use in the UK since 2010; some made before the date are still in circulation, so proceed with caution. SF (Sulphuryl Fluoride): a safer alternative to Methyl Bromide but still not safe for use in bonfires

DH: stands for a Dielectric Heated pallet

EU Stamps

Pallets with EUR markings are heavy-duty and identical in size (1200mm by 800mm). The EUR stamps indicates a pallet originated in Europe. There are several additional pallet markings that may appear on EUR pallets, the most common being EPAL to indicate a European pallet was made to EPAL production standards. EPAL Pallets are heat treated (HT) and Kiln-dred (KT) as part of their certification even though they don’t bear HT-KD markings.

All pallets of CP size feature CP stamps (Popular Chemical Industry). In total, there are 9 CP sizes/configurations, so you may see a CP pallet stamped with CP1, CP2…CP9 to designate which category it belongs in. CP Pallets are built to different dimensions and specifications than standard pallets to ensure they provide the safest transport for medical and industrial substances. CP Pallets are popularly used in chemical and plastics industries where sensitive materials need extra security in transport and storage. Because a CP stamp refers to how the pallet is built and not a chemical treatment, they are typically safe to reuse. Just be sure to inspect a CP pallet thoroughly for any stains or flaws as you can’t be sure what was transported on it previously!

What about pallet color markings ? What do different colored pallets mean?

Pallet Color markings indicate the pallet belongs to a pallet rental pool and should not be used in craft projects but instead returned to the company that owns it.

Some of these pallet color markings include:

What if there are no pallet markings?

Pallets used for internal transit within your country may not bear any stamps. Most of these are not chemically treated and are thus safe. You must, however, exercise caution. Many craftsmen utilize these pallets securely; however, it is wise to find out where they came from and how they were made. If you are unsure about the meaning of a pallet symbol, you can always contact a pallet expert to help trace the origin of your pallet or determine if it’s safe for reuse.
