Do not use picture wire for hanging mirrors; this type of wire lacks sufficient strength and therefore may stretch and break. To install an unbacked mirror, first attach a row of J-hooks to the wall along the horizontal line drawn earlier.

Read More »Sanding with a power sander is easiest and quickest, but you can also use sandpaper wrapped around a wood block or plastic sanding block. Afterward, draw a horizontal guideline on the wall to mark the intended position of the mirror's bottom edge. Use a carpenter's level as a straightedge and make the line as long as the mirror is wide. Now you are ready to hang the mirror. If it is backed, first measure vertically from the bottom to the top edge of the hole in one of the hangers. Be sure that both hangers are adjusted equally and positioned at about the middle of their range. This allows making later adjustments to them, should that be necessary. Then measure from each side of the mirror to the center of the nearest fastener. On the wall, make short vertical marks that cross the upper horizontal line at these points. Position J-hooks -- these are J-shaped metal fasteners that are available both at hardware stores and from mirror suppliers -- above the vertical marks so that the base of each hook rests on the horizontal line. To attach the hooks, use sturdy hollow-wall fasteners if the wall is made of wallboard or plaster, ordinary wood screws if hooks are over the wall framing or masonry anchors if the hooks are being fastened to brick or concrete. Hang the mirror from the J-hooks, then rest the level on the mirror's top edge to check your work. If the mirror is crooked, remove it from the wall, adjust the hangers and then rehang it. Do not use picture wire for hanging mirrors; this type of wire lacks sufficient strength and therefore may stretch and break.
