Why should you sleep with your feet uncovered?

According to a spokesperson for the National Sleep Foundation, when you stick your foot out, the arteriovenous anastomoses allows more heat to escape, regulating your body temperature without disrupting your overall comfort.

Why Sleeping With One Foot Sticking Out Feels So Good!

Humans and all other warm-blooded animals have thermoregulation, which means we're constantly burning energy to keep our internal organs at an optimal body temperature. Temperature is maintained by burning energy, but also through different biological responses like sweating, shivering, and the amount of blood flowing to the skin. Our feet and hands are major factors in maintaining a constant temperature. Blood runs away from the heart in arteries to vessels then capillaries to cells and then back to the heart in veins. When it's hot, blood flows more freely; and when it's cold, vessels constrict and heat is conserved. When you feel uncomfortably cold, the somatosensory cortex of your brain triggers the thermoregulation process: your body temperature increases by shivering or opening blood vessels. Inside the feet are arteriovenous anastomoses, which connect arteries directly to the veins, bypassing the capillaries. When you're warm, vessels in your feet dilate allowing more blood to get to the skin's surface, where heat is lost to the air (a process called vasodilation). But, when you're cold, those arteriovenous anastomoses become narrower, minimizing the amount of heat loss (vasoconstriction). This is why putting one foot out from under the cover can cool off your entire body. According to a spokesperson for the National Sleep Foundation, when you stick your foot out, the arteriovenous anastomoses allows more heat to escape, regulating your body temperature without disrupting your overall comfort. It's sort of a neat little hack you should try next time you're having a hard time falling asleep. What other kinds of crazy things do you do to get to sleep? Leave a comment down below and maybe we'll feature it on an upcoming episode of DNews!
