Floating shelves are great shelving options to add extra storage space to your vertical space. Using support brackets, these are perfect for showing off or highlighting your prized possessions. Still, depending on the type of floating shelf you use, your floating shelves could eventually sag or deform. If this occurs, check out this guide on how to fix a sagging floating shelf without replacing it entirely.

Step 1: Remove the Shelf

The first step to fixing your floating shelf is to remove everything on top of it. Take everything from your shelf and store it where you can find it. Label the storage container so that you know it contains these items. Then, remove the shelf from the wall. You might need to remove the screws securing it in place, but you probably won’t need to remove the supports themselves.

Step 2: Weight the Shelf

Then, place the shelf upside down on a solid surface with the sag pointing upward. Place heavy items or weights on the sag until gravity forces the shelf to return to its original shape. Larger, flat items such as books work best since they cover more surface area. Small, heavy objects won’t work as well, nor will they distribute weight as evenly.

Step 3: Check the Fit and Reattach the Shelf

Put the shelf back onto its supports without screwing or fastening it into place. Check that the shelf fits properly. Look for any gaps between the shelving unit and the wall or any difficulties when securing the fit. These could signify further issues with the fit and possibly lead to greater sagging and pressure on the shelf. Notably, softer woods sag more easily than harder woods, but they can reshape easier. Harder woods, contrarily, are more resistant to sagging, but they take longer to fix if needed. Once you eliminate the sagging and have no further issues, reattach the shelf to the supports using the same hardware as before.

Step 4: Modify as Needed

The final step for how to fix a sagging floating shelf is to modify it as needed. Additional supports or harder woods could help the shelf resist bowing or sagging over time. After you’ve completed all the modifications, unpack all your stored items and re-shelf them on the straight wood. For extra support, be sure to use the heavy-duty hidden shelf brackets from Right On Bracket. These are designed to mount behind drywall to wall studs, given their heavy-duty design and weight capacity. Whether you use a right- or left-side stud mount, our brackets come in 8”, 10”, 12”, and 15” length varieties with 3/8” and 1/2″ thickness. Is it OK to screw joist hangers?

This is a big no-no. Joist hangers (and hurricane clips) are intended to be attached with nails or, in some cases, a specialty screw. Deck screws - like this - are not acceptable. These hangers are actually engineered elements, and as such, must be attached according to the manufacturer's instructions.

snbsc-planning.com - Do not use screws for framing!

Our inspectors have seen a disturbing trend of late: people using wood or deck screws when building structural elements. This means ordinary wood screws cannot be used to attach rafters to top plates, or joists to beams.

Nor can wood screws be used to install joist hangers.

Joist hangers are a really handy means of attaching joists to beams or ledger boards, but our inspectors have seen too many instances of joist hangers where builders have used deck screws as a fastener. This is a big no-no. These hangers are actually engineered elements, and as such, must be attached according to the manufacturer’s instructions. There are many manufacturers of joist hangars, and none of them approve the use of deck or wood screws as an attachment. The only kind of screws that are acceptable are specialized screws, such as the Simpson brand joist hanger screws, for use in the Simpson joist hanger systems. Deck screws or wood screws are not permitted in any structural situations: this includes building walls, attaching stairs to headers, constructing lintels – and yes, our inspectors have issued orders to correct improper building of all those elements. Don’t get caught out having to rebuild – do it right the first time: use proper-length construction nails for structural work.
